P. Howard Lyons' Ibidem magazine put the cutting edge on close-up magic. From 1955 to 1979, P. Howard Lyons and his mildly crazed but brilliant crew published 36 issues of Ibidem containing work that is still razor sharp! Those issues accumulated quite a reputation as the best source for avant-garde card magic and many other curious findings. In the intervening years copies of Ibidem have been much sought after and high prices paid. Now, the first 16 issues of Ibidem are available in a single hardbound volume along with additional rare material related to the history and publication of this landmark journal.

Contains contributions by: Ed Marlo, Stewart James, Howard Lyons, Norm Houghton, Mel Stover, The Amazing Randi, Ken Beale, Tom Ransom, Francis Haxton, L. Vosburgh Lyons, Peter Warlock, Martin Gardner, Faucett W. Ross, Bill Simon, Tom Bowyer, Elmer Biddle, William Miesel, Alex Elmsley, Ravelli and Neal Elias.

352 large-format pages, hardbound

Ibidem V2, published and edited by Howard Lyons and illustrated by his pro-artist wife, Pat, was issued from Toronto, Ontario, Canada, from 1955 to 1979, and was the only notable magic periodical in Canada's history. Ibidem was so far ahead of its time in the type of material it published, much of it still feels cutting edge. Ed Marlo, Alex Elmsley, Roy Walton and many other leading lights chose Ibidem to publish large amounts of their best work. Michael Close wrote in Genii magazine, "As I have said before (but few people seem to be listening), some of the best card magic I've read is hidden in the pages of Ibidem." Yes, the emphasis was on card magic, although puzzles and recreational mathematics also appeared frequently in its pages.

Ibidem was an anomaly: an intellectual magic magazine, leavened with a unique sense of humor and self-parody, with no equal in its time, nor to this day.

This second volume of Lyons's widely acclaimed journal presents issues 17 through 28, and includes, along with the usual innovative assortment, special issues by Ed Marlo and Ravelli. 358 large-format pages, hardbound.

Ibidem V3 the third and final volume of the magic magazine that was so underground, it's just now coming up for air. From 1963-1979 Howard Lyons' Ibidem was so far ahead of the pack in innovative card magic, we're still catching up to it. Reprinted in this jumbo volume are the final eight issues plus an unpublished issue of material from "crazy" Tom Ransom.

Tossed in for good measure is Howard Lyons' long-anticipated avant-garde magazine, Aziz, which Howard had begun assembling a few years before his death with the intentions that it would replace Ibidem. Unfortunately, Howard didn't live long enough to get Aziz out, but the material collected for the first issue survived, and it makes up the first section of Aziz & Beyond. Also included is additional material by Howard and others, gathered from his files and other sources, which might not have been included were it not for Max Maven having done such an extraordinary job of unearthing, editing, interpreting and organizing this material.

Ibidem 3 and Aziz & Beyond contain contributions by: Howard Lyons, Mel Stover, Peter Duffie, Allan Slaight, Ken Beale, Phil Goldstein, Robert E. Neale, Paul Swinford, J.K. Hartman, Ron Wohl and many others.

Over 140 pages of unpublished material, 360 pages in total plus 12 in full color. Hardbound.

Qty:    Magic Mirror, The by Robert E. Neile and David Parr
The Magic Mirror is Robert E. Neale's newest exploration into the innermost workings of performance magic, filtered through the professional sensibilities of co-author David Parr. Dr. Neale insightfully identifies the many kinds of magic, in theatrical, historical and social contexts. From this foundation, he creates a method for classifying magical effects by their psychological roots. Using this system the reader can readily determine the underlying emotional content of an effect and build a powerful presentation around it. The Magic Mirror shows how magic can be comic, serious, thrilling, playful, inspiring. Included is a selection of exceedingly clever effects with full presentations, to illustrate Dr. Neale's points. Among these are:

Baffling Borromean Rings-Three permanently interlocked rings change their configuration, even when a spectator holds them to make sure that this is impossible.

The Last Dream-With tombstone-shaped cards, the performer takes his audience on a nightmarish trip through mortality.

Counting Scarecrows-An origami crow mysteriously outwits a group of "hunters" who are guided in their movements by a spectator.

Whatsabox-A simple box of cardboard turns out to be far from simple. First it has an open top and closed bottom, then two tops, then two bottoms-and a ball placed into the box finds itself trapped inside, then just as mysteriously is released.

These and nine other effects are taught and amplified by the reflections of Eugene Burger, Max Maven and David Parr, who have peered into Robert E. Neale's astonishing Magic Mirror. Now it is your turn. Hardcover, 182 pages.
